What you'll learn.

A regulated Level 4 is mostly physics and physiology, and that is the point. The distance between a good result and a burn is knowing why.

The science underneath
  • Laser physics, and how light becomes heat in a hair follicle
  • The hair growth cycle, and why it decides how many sessions a client needs
  • The structure of hair and skin
  • Fitzpatrick skin typing, and how it changes your settings
Treating safely
  • Consultation, patch testing and contraindications
  • When to refuse a client, and why that is the professional answer
  • Laser safety, controlled areas, eyewear and the legal paperwork
  • Recognising and managing an adverse reaction
The three systems
  • Alexandrite at 755nm, and the skin and hair it suits
  • Nd:YAG at 1064nm, and the skin types it protects
  • Diode laser, and where it fits between the two
  • Choosing parameters for the client in front of you, not for the machine

Online, then three days in the clinic

How it runs.

The theory is online and it is finished before you arrive. The practical is three days here, on live models booked for you, across all three systems.

Four is the number that matters here. On a Class 4 laser you learn by holding the handpiece, and there are only so many hours across three days to divide between you.

  1. The theory, online

    Laser physics, hair biology, skin typing and safety, worked through at your own pace and completed before your first clinic day.

  2. Three days on live models

    Real clients, booked for you, across the three systems. You take the consultation, you set the parameters, you treat, and I am next to you while you do it.

  3. Assessed on the machine

    Your practical assessment happens across those days. Consultation, patch testing, treatment and records, because with a laser the file is a legal document as much as a clinical one.

Who teaches it

Most courses teach you one machine.
This one teaches you the technology.

You cannot judge a laser you have never used. Training across three systems is the difference between operating a machine and understanding it.

Laser training in this country sells from about £60 to £1,500 plus VAT, and the cheapest end is not a cheaper version of this. It is a different thing with a similar name. Here is what the difference contains.

  • One or two days, and sometimes no days at all
  • A group that shares the handpiece
  • Models you arrange yourself
  • The certificate, and nothing about the business

What qualifications do I need before I can train in laser?

A Level 3, and there is more than one route in: Beauty Therapy, Anatomy & Physiology, or Access to Aesthetic Therapies. If you are not sure whether what you hold counts, send it to me and I will check it before you spend anything.

Can anyone do a laser course?

Anyone can buy one. Not every course lets you work afterwards. A CPD-accredited certificate has no regulated qualification behind it, and insurers and local authority licensing generally ask for a regulated Level 4. That is the difference worth checking before you pay, whoever you train with.

How much does a laser course cost, and why do prices vary so much?

From about £60 to £1,500 plus VAT, and that range is not a quality scale so much as two different products. The cheap end is usually a CPD certificate, often online only. A regulated Level 4 sits at the top because it carries assessment, external quality assurance and practical days on live models.

How much can I charge for laser treatments?

Treatments typically charge from around £40 to £200 or more, depending on the area and your local market. What you earn from that depends on your prices, your costs and how full your diary is, which is why the business programme sits inside the course rather than being sold separately.

Is a CPD accredited course enough to work?

Often not, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. CPD accreditation is largely self-certified, whereas Ofqual regulation is external. Ask your insurer and your local authority what they require for laser before you book any course, including this one.

Does the course include a laser machine?

No, and I would be cautious of one that did. Choosing a laser is covered inside the business programme, and it is a decision you should make after you understand the technology, not as part of a package.
